Walmart Foundation’s Bright Spot for Reading
The Boys & Girls Club of Marion County has been selected as a recipient of a Walmart Foundation for an Adolescent Readers grant. The grant’s purpose is to introduce youth ages 11-15 to become life long learners and to enjoy reading in their spare time.
The foundation provides excellent opportunities for children to use a literacy rich environment to make it a fun, stimulating, and life-long experience for reluctant readers and offer a variety of reading materials.
The “Walmart Foundation’s Bright Spot for Reading” is a reading center that will be totally dedicated for middle and high school members, and there will be a professional to serve as coordinator for the literacy activities, and an administrator to be the key contact with BGCA staff.

Annual Board of Directors Corporation Meeting & Teen Center Dedication
2010
A BOYS & GIRLS CLUB MOMENT
Thank you to our Board Members and all of our guests for what was a successful Annual Luncheon. Congratulations to our newest members elected to the Board of Directors, George Durhan, Rob Batsel, and John Jackson.
Congratulations also to to our new Chief Volunteer Officer Mark Imes. To our New Officers: Michael Warren 1st VP (Suppot Services), Fred Roberts 2nd VP (Operations), Karen Reed 3rd VP (Resource Dev.), Treasurer Bob Tuke, and Secrectary Betty Hackmyer. The Volunteer Award was presented to Carolyn Humphrey and Elaine Zirakian for their hard work and dedication in organizing our annual “Roc with the Doc’s” fund raiser. The outstanding Board Member for the year award was presented to Betty Hackmyer for her outstanding dedication to our organization, and the Presidents Award presented to Bobby James for his leadership and devoted services to our youth, and for his deep involvement in our Dunnellon Club.
Special thanks to the United Way of Marion County, Children’s Alliance and Kids Central for their continued support, the City of Ocala for making improvements to our Ocala facility, to all our donors making this possible, our staff, and all of the people that support our Clubs, for their passion, and encouragement, in supporting our young people.
Today, some of our children, Shi-Ann Atkins, Coryon Gillum, Terial Scott, and Brianna Walcott reminded us why we work so hard to continue to better our organization. They spoke on what The Boys & Girls club means to them, their words were inspiring and uplifting. They are a great example of some of what our Boys & Girls clubs have to offer.
Mayor Ewers along with the Ocala Chamber of Commerce offically dedicated the newly renovated teen center. Mayor Ewers told the audience that funds from CDBG were used for the renovation. The City of Ocala has been a true champion in helping the club create an atmosphere for teens. Bill Chambers spoke on behalf of the McCoy family in the dedication of the fitness area in memory of their son Rob McCoy. Many of the programs and activites in the Teen Center have been sponsored by the United Way of Marion County and Taco Bell. Taco Bell is a national partner of Boys & Girls Club of America
