Benjamin Rubin presents a check for $1000 to Jerry Lane, Director of the Boys & Girls Clubs
of Marion County. His father, Dr. Jay Rubin, is beside him
When Benjamin Rubin celebrated his Bar Mitzvah on July 19th, he used the opportunity to make a difference in his community. Rubin, who is an 8th grader at Howard Middle School, requested that the customary gifts go instead to two organizations who serve those in need: Interfaith Emergency Services and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Marion County, both of which received $1,000.
Here are his remarks from the event:
“Throughout my life, I have received toys when I asked for them, ridden my bike when I wanted to, and eaten delicious meals cooked by my mom. I often think about the people who do not have these luxuries or even basic necessities. Interfaith is a program that provides families with basic necessities and shelter. I decided to help other people who are less fortunate, such as those at Interfaith, by providing food and other assistance. Additionally, I decided to volunteer my time at the Boys and Girls Club of Marion County to teach music to the kids there. Music is very important not only to me but to the boys and girls there because learning music can increase math scores and it’s fun! The Boys & Girls Club’s Mission is “To enable all young people, especially those in the most need, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens,” which I helped to fulfill by volunteering my time.
Instead of a gift to me, I ask that you donate to these organizations that improve the lives of so many people in this community. Please make checks payable directly to The Boys & Girls Club of Marion County and to Interfaith Emergency Services. Then I will be honored to personally deliver your checks to these fine organizations and I will consider that to be the best gift of all. Thank you!”
Benjamin Rubin is the son of Dr. Jay Rubin, who has served on the Board of Directors of the Club and is the organizer of the annual ‘Roc with the Docs’ fundraiser for the club.
